Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein became the rabbi of Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue in 1970, following his ordination. Prior to his appointment he served as student rabbi here for five years, so he and his wife Sharon were involved with the congregation almost from its founding in 1964. He retired as Senior Rabbi in August 2008 following which he has been appointed our Emeritus Rabbi. In recognition of his service to Liberal Judaism he has been elected President of the Movement, and is Chair of the LJ Rabbinic Board (Bet Din).
His first degree was in Biology and Zoology and his PhD on the subject of “Travels to the Holyland: 1790 – 1830”. The case study was the first journey (in 1827) of Moses and Judith Montefiore and he has specialised in the study of the Montefiores. For 20 years Rabbi Goldstein was in charge of the Liberal Judaism Education Department and has wide experience in Jewish education. He has published a series of text books and he and Sharon founded and ran Kadimah Summer School for 19 years. They also organised several Liberal Judaism Conferences and together organise for NPLS tours to places of Jewish interest ( to the Southern States of America, previously to Greece, Morocco, Spain, Uzbekistan and Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and many times to Israel).
Rabbi Goldstein initiated in 1979 the NPLS connection with Czechoslovak Jewry and led several visits to Prague, Kolin & Plzen in Communist times, and many visits by groups to the Czech and Slovak Republics since the Velvet Revolution. He has helped develop Liberal Judaism in these countries and acted as consultant rabbi to congregations in Prague, Brno and Plzen. In 2008/10 he was the regular visiting rabbi to the Bratislava community.
He is Chair of the European Union for Progressive Judaism and is on the Executive Committee of the World Union for Progressive Judaism and the International Council of Christians and Jews. He co-edited the new Liberal Judaism High Holy Day Machzor Ruach Chadashah and was chair of the Editorial Committee of our Siddur Lev Chadash.
In August 2010 he co-edited (as with the Machzor, together with our member Rabbi Dr Charles Middleburgh) an anthology of readings for the penitential season “High & Holy Days”. His wife Sharon is a magistrate and set up the Care and Bereavement project in the synagogue, and is involved nationally in Jewish bereavement work. Their daughter, Ruth Colin, is the congregation’s choir leader, and their son, Rabbi Aaron Goldstein, is now our Senior Rabbi.
