At NPLS we are keen to make a significant contribution to wider society and try to change things for the better. We want to make a difference and it forms part of our Jewish identity.
The social action we take part in is wide ranging, but it includes formal or informal volunteering, the giving of time and money or simply people helping people. We arrange activities for Mitzvah Day, take part in sponsored events to raise awareness and support for different charities, and we try to be involved politically in fighting for social justice – whether we are supporting gay marriage or immigration; the community wants our voices to be heard.
The Bike Project
We are proud of our long history with The Bike Project, an award winning charity that unites second-hand, fixed-up bikes with refugees and asylum seekers. NPLS has supported The Bike Project since 2013 and we are now a Bike Project Bike Hub, which means we are a drop-off point for bikes on their way to The Bike Project.
If you wish to donate a bike, please contact the office to arrange a time. You can also fill out The Bike Project Gift Aid Form at www.npls.org.uk/bikehub-gaf.
Trussell Trust Foodbank Scheme
We support the Trussell Trust Foodbank scheme, helping to feed people who are in crisis in Hillingdon.
We make it easy for our members to support this initiative by having collection bins in the back lobby of the building. Many people buy one extra item in their weekly shop to contribute to our collection. We have partnered with our friends at Emmanuel Church in Northwood and a number of members volunteer on a Friday morning to help distribute food, as well as a cup of coffee and a friendly ear. We also help at the church’s monthly community lunch where anyone who is in need can come along for a fantastic free 3 course meal.
If you would like to volunteer or find out more, please contact Juliet Lewin.
