At NPLS we are keen to make a significant contribution to wider society and try to change things for the better. We want to make a difference and it forms part of our Jewish identity.
The social action we take part in is wide ranging, but it includes formal or informal volunteering, the giving of time and money or simply people helping people. We arrange activities for Mitzvah Day, take part in sponsored events to raise awareness and support for different charities, and we try to be involved politically in fighting for social justice – whether we are supporting gay marriage or immigration; the community wants our voices to be heard.
To support our local community, we arrange collections for the Trussell Trust Foodbank scheme, helping to feed people who are in crisis in Hillingdon.
A large number of our members support this initiative and are able to be active in social action – buy a little bit extra in your weekly shop and bring it to the collection point at the Synagogue when you come in (by the back door of the shul!). It’s so easy, yet it makes such a difference. We have partnered with our friends at Emmanuel Church in Northwood and a number of members volunteer on a Friday morning to help distribute food, as well as a cup of coffee and a friendly ear. We also help at the church’s monthly community lunch where anyone who is in need can come along for a fantastic free 3 course meal.
If you would like to volunteer, join us for a meal or find out more about the work we are doing please contact Juliet Lewin.
